The only time I can see an artist not making some money from an album, is if that album sales terribly, and the record label isn't able to recover their expenditure. In which case, album profit goes first and foremost to the label until they've made back however much an album cost to make, and marketing etc. And the artist might not see royalties for that album for a while.

Even then, I'm not 100% sure that's how it works. But I know for a fact your High School Music Production Center's numbers are way off somewhere. Unless, they are basing their stats off of some really unique, sh***y deal that was made in which an artist only got a cent per album sale lol. But last I checked (and it's been a bit) around a dollar on AVERAGE is what artists make per album sold (but again, this is usually after labels recover their expenditure).

Which, a dollar is still only a small fraction of 15 dollar albums. But it's definitely considerably more then a penny.

SO/UN, what you're saying is just not feasible.

Majority of artists don't go gold or platinum. Therefore they would expect to earn only a $1,000 per album if they're lucky, or maybe $2,000. Even with what they'll earn with concerts and stuff they'd have to release like 6 albums a year to survive. And that's just to get by, not the exorbitant lifestyles we see from them.

Soulja Boy earns 15 cents for every Youtube comment on his videos. By your saying that's a more profitable venture.

You shouldn't have thrown school man. You need the Business and Economics in your life even if music is your field of interest.

I also think it's a bit fat artists saying labels take advantage of them. Like Ian said, the brand name is very very important for them.

I know its hard to believe (the whole $10,000=1million LP sales)...but the truth is almost never easy 2 handle...& yes some do make more but artist that are new or fairly new such as B.o.B. make 1-2 cents per album sold on average...

Lets put it this way. An independent artist can have 2 fans and make money from giving concerts to those 2 fans. A major artist can have a label that backs them in creating albums and promoting, and even though the artist doesn't necessarily make that much off said album sales, the promotion (which the label has made money from) has earned them 10 fans whom they can make profit from giving concerts to.

So now not only are the Labels making money from album sales. Major label artist make more money from concerts. And the artist still takes something away from those sales on top of it all.

Yes major label studio albums do cost potentially millions to make. No an artist doesn't make a penny per album sale lmao. I'm almost positive most artists catch something around $1 per album sale depending on the artist. A few (the largest percentage) goes to the record labels (Because they are who invest in the first place so they make their money back first), and a few goes to retailers if I'm not mistaken.

Artists do make limited money from CD sales compared to other things. Labels profit the most from album sales, however, without the labels putting up that money and promoting an artist wouldn't be able to make nearly as much money from things outside of album sales from things like concerts because he wouldn't have an audience which the label investing in said artist has afforded him.

I am not "talking out of" my "arse"...I know this 4 a FACT...the money from album sales goes 2 pay off the millions it (believe it or not) takes 2 make a major label studio quality album...this is why artists say that record labels use artist & that artists should stay independent so much!!

SO/UN, I'm sorry sir but you're talking out of your arse.

An artist makes a penny per album? So they need to sell a hundred albums to make a dollar? Or in other words, earn just $10,000 from selling a million copies?

    Naaah, man.

I don't know how the industry works but I suspect it's like most other ventures. In as, the label mass produces the albums, carrying all the costs such as distribution, CDs, print and advertising. Hence the artist recieves royalties of about 10-20%, with the album earning the majority of the income to cover costs and remain profitable. This means that if a record costs $10-20, the artist earns something in the region of $1-4. Which means realistically they could get a couple million from sales alone.

Using your own Maths, Lupe would have earned only a few thousand dollars from each album he released, as he has never sold a million copies of each of his albums!
